Standard Operating Guidelines
HELMET MARKINGS
1. PURPOSE.
To ensure that the Incident Commander and other supervisors can readily determine the training level of all firefighters including mutual aid resources on the scene of an emergency incident.
2. SCOPE.
This procedure shall apply to all fire departments and firefighters represented by the Oktibbeha County Fire Commission or the Oktibbeha County Fire Association.
3. PROCEDURE
Firefighters will use one of the following helmet marking schemes:
Scheme 1.
The firefighter/helmet number shall be displayed on both sides of the helmet.
Firefighters certified to Volunteer Level I shall display a Roman numeral I on the front and back of their helmet. Firefighters certified to Volunteer Level II, Certified Rural Fire Officer, Firefighter I, or higher training level shall display a Roman Numeral II on the front and back of their helmet. Firefighters not certified at least to Volunteer Level I shall not display any numbers, letters, insignia or other markings on the front or back of their helmet, other than small reflective shapes.
Scheme 2.
The firefighter/helmet number shall be displayed on the rear of the helmet.
Firefighters certified to Volunteer Level I shall display a Roman numeral I on both sides of their helmet. Firefighters certified to Volunteer Level II, Certified Rural Fire Officer, Firefighter I, or higher training level shall display a Roman Numeral II on both sides of their helmet. Firefighters not certified at least to Volunteer Level I shall not display any numbers, letters, insignia or other markings on the sides of their helmet, other than small reflective shapes. Department name, rank or function insignia may be displayed on the front.
